Arc in the Park Family Fun Day and Big Sleep Out brings together almost 800 people to mark a major milestone

On Saturday 13th June, Taunton Rugby Football Club hosted a fantastic day of celebration, community spirit and awareness as Arc marked 50 years of supporting people affected by homelessness across Somerset.

Arc in the Park Family Fun Day and the annual Big Sleep Out welcomed just under 800 people through the gates, bringing together residents, supporters, businesses, community partners and volunteers for a memorable event that showcased the impact Arc has made over the past five decades. For 50 years, Arc has been inspiring lives and providing vital support to some of the most vulnerable members of the community.

Blessed with sunshine throughout the day, visitors enjoyed a vibrant atmosphere filled with entertainment, activities and opportunities to support Arc’s work. A wide variety of stalls lined the venue, offering everything from delicious food and refreshments to products from local traders and community organisations. With plenty of free, family-friendly activities available, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

A particular highlight was the live entertainment stage, kindly donated free of charge by Kevin Stratton from Kevin Stratton Production Services and hosted by Apple FM. The stage featured an impressive line-up of talented musicians performing throughout the afternoon and into the evening. The diverse range of music created a lively backdrop to the event, bringing people together and adding to the celebratory atmosphere.

As the daytime activities drew to a close, attention turned to the Big Sleep Out, where participants spent the night outdoors to raise funds and increase awareness of the challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness. While the weather remained pleasant, the experience served as an important reminder of the reality many individuals face when rough sleeping, with most participants waking to damp and soggy sleeping bags.

The event marked a significant milestone in Arc’s history, celebrating 50 years of providing support, accommodation and opportunities for people affected by homelessness in Somerset. It also highlighted the collective efforts taking place across the county to tackle homelessness and create positive change.
The event was made possible thanks to the support of Taunton Town Council, Kevin Stratton Production Services, Apple FM, local businesses, performers, volunteers and the many individuals who generously gave their time, energy and support.

The day was a tremendous success, not only celebrating Arc’s remarkable 50-year legacy but also strengthening community understanding of homelessness and the challenges many people face. The generosity, enthusiasm and commitment shown by everyone involved demonstrated the compassion that exists within the Taunton community and reinforced the importance of continuing Arc’s vital work for many years to come.
